Closing event of the Young Research Workshop on April 8, 2026

Guest of Honor of this study afternoon, historian of science, Sebastian Grevsmühl (CNRS, EHESS) and author of The Earth viewed from above, the invention of the global environment, (Seuil, 2014), presented how his research focused on ways of seeing the Earth from outer space and how these images convey ideologies and political visions. Inspired by Visual Studies, his approach consists in questioning the images, the metaphors associated with them to highlight their historical variability and the influence they have on our perception of the world.

After his presentation, three doctoral and doctoral students shared the progress of their research project.

Célestine Rabouam (Doctoral student in Geography, French Institute of Geopolitics, GEODE Research Center): “Starlink: a tool that has become essential in the territories in the grip of an urgent need for communication infrastructures? »

Dorian Groll (Doctoral student in Society Sciences, Center Maurice Halbwachs, CAK): “Observation of the Earth as Knowledge of European Government”

Alix Burgun (Doctoral student in Geography, Institute for Environmental Governance and Territorial Development, University of Geneva) “Managing the Space climate? The role of Earth observation in the Paris Agreement”
