‘Europe in Space’: Harmonizing the institutional orchestra

Alban Guyomarc’h, associate researcher at the chair and doctoral student in space law at Assas, revisits the concept of ‘Europe in Space’ for the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics (Big Europe) in order to clarify its contours and possible meanings. The very term ‘Europe in Space’ covers a heterogeneous group of public and private actors operating at different levels – European, national, and local – whose programs reflect institutional fragmentation and fragmented governance rather than a common strategy.

Katia Coutant, Associate Researcher at the Space Chair, talks to The Conversation about the increasingly popular term “weaponization of Space”. How does it differ from the notion of militarization? How do dual-use technologies blur the boundary between civilian and military? And what does the Space Treaty really say about the use of weapons?

Should the Moon be considered a common good or the object of a new mining race? This is the question raised by journalist Charles Perraguin for Le Philonomist, Philosophie Magazine’s online medium. He interviewed our Space Chair post-docs, Susie Pottier and Camille Ternier, to shed light on the symbolism of the Moon for human societies and the tensions raised by the resource extraction ambitions of China, the USA and Russia.

On 12 February 2025, Stéphanie Ruphy, Scientific Director of the ENS Space Chair, spoke at the 13ᵉ edition of Perspectives Spatiales, organised by GIFAS – Groupement des Industries Françaises Aéronautiques et Spatiales and Novaspace. In her contribution, she analysed the challenges of a shared vision for the use of Space. The event brought together more than 250 experts from the private and public sectors of the French and European space industry.

What have they become? Through a series of portraits, the ENS website meets the alumni. In this article, Alban Guyomarc’h, associate researcher at the Espace chair, talks about how he came to study space law. He talks about his research themes. Can space exploration and global warming be reconciled? When you work in the field of space, do you dream of going to the Moon?

Stéphanie Ruphy, Scientific Director of the Space Chair, gave a wide-ranging interview to XXI magazine on the Chair’s areas of research : uses and representations of Space, Space as a common good and the sustainability issues arising in the light of the increasing number of satellites put into orbit in recent years.

Stéphanie Ruphy, Scientific Director of the Space Chair at ENS-PSL took part in the round table devoted to space culture (competitiveness of the new economy and citizen support for space policies) at the Assises du New Space on Wednesday 26 June 2024 alongside Jean-Baptiste DESBOIS, director of the Cité de l’Espace, Hugo LISOIR, youtuber, Vanina PAOLI-GAGIN Gagin, senator for Aube and Lou Valade from the student association ASTRES.

Alban Guyomarc’h, associate researcher at the Space Chair and teacher of the course on the challenges of space law, took part in the Téléphone Sonne programme on France Inter alongside Arnaud Saint-Martin, researcher at the CNRS and Sophie Bécherel, science journalist. On the agenda: Space X, the International Space Station and China’s space mission to the far side of the Moon.
