Session 5: Space Debris: Governance and Philosophical and Ecological Issues

On Tuesday 20 May, the 5th session welcomed Fanny Valeyre and Anna Hurova, who focused their presentation on space debris, crossing philosophy, law and science and technology studies in connection with research theme 3 (sustainable uses of space).

Two rich presentations fuelled the discussions:

  • A philosophical approach to space debris. Penser les interactions avec les environnements spatial et terrestre’, in which Fanny Valeyre, a post-doctoral student at the Space Chair, explored the questions posed by the remains of space technology on the relationship between nature and technology, as well as the meaning of ecology in this context.
  • In her presentation, Anna Hurova, a doctorate in international space law, presented her research into the regulation of space debris and her experiments with gamification as a tool for raising awareness and sharing information.

The evening continued with a pilot session of the serious game ‘Sustainable Space’, designed by Anna Hurova (in collaboration with CNES), which aims to reflect the dilemmas of space governance in a playful way.
